Yarntons - seven decades of service

shop at nightIn 1945, when New Zealanders were getting on with rebuilding their lives, Bob and Beth Yarnton opened their first shop in Mokoia Road. It says much for the quality of product and service that today, 75 years on, the name Yarntons is still above the door - and the store has grown to three shop frontages.

In the intervening years Yarntons have had stores in Glenfield and Northcote, and today operate a Menswear & Women's wear store in Devonport – now owned by Bruce Yarnton, son of Bob and Beth, and his wife Karen.

The Birkenhead store began as a true draper, selling zips, buttons and patterns as well as men’s and women’s clothing. As time went on the store also specialized in school uniforms, and continues to do so today.

The late Bob Yarnton was a mainstay of the Birkenhead community, president of the Business Association and Rotary Club, a director of Rotary International, member of the hospital board, JP and active in many charitable health initiatives including the founding of Cure Kids. Beth was always at Bob’s shoulder in the many fundraising events instigated.

Their children attended Northcote College and the family home was in Raleigh Road, so it’s fair to say their local credentials are strong! Bruce says it is satisfying to know that among the store’s customers are second and third generations of local families.

Over the years the clothing brands stocked by Yarntons have changed – today you’ll find an impressive range of high quality contemporary apparel.

Other things don’t change. The Yarnton name for customer service and community service remains as strong as ever.
