It was a wet Monday morning in Birkenhead. Walking down Hinemoa Street for a coffee I passed at least six umbrellas coming the other way, and every one of them was a Blunt.
Blunt was designed by Greig Brebner, a New Zealand engineer who went to London on his OE in 1999. He is 1.9 metres tall, which on a rainy London footpath puts your eyes at exactly the height of everyone else's umbrella spikes. He decided he could do better, and it took him about ten years of prototypes - wind tunnels, and the windier hills of Auckland, before the first Blunts went on sale in 2009.
The rounded tips give the umbrella its name. Each one opens like a miniature umbrella at the edge of the canopy and pulls the fabric tight all the way round, which is where ordinary umbrellas fail first. And they are designed to be repaired: if something breaks, Blunt will fix it rather than send you a new one.
From a shopkeeper's point of view that is slightly awkward. Once you have one, you don't need another for a very long time. We have decided we can live with that.
